The Grand Korumak Association® was founded to support the development, breeding, and raising of purposefully bred livestock guardian dogs while prioritizing the working function and health of the Grand Korumak®.

Physical Health:

  • Shall be athletic

  • DNA tested and clear (breeding dogs)

  • OFA, PennHip, or Veterinarian approved radiographs to rule out hip dysplasia

  • No dog with known genetic abnormalities or poor conformation shall be bred

Behavioral Health

Guaranteeing behavioral health in individual dogs can be very complex. In order to secure behavior as a trait, we ask our breeders to only breed dogs that display the working functions consistently, while keeping the following in mind:

  • Appropriate discernment of threatening humans versus non-threatening humans to their livestock

  • Appropriate acceptance of properly introduced humans

  • Appropriate wariness of strangers

  • Desires to remain close to or “sticky” to the livestock

  • Accepts appropriate boundaries

  • Discerning barkers

  • Ability to protect livestock from all land and aerial predators

  • Ability to cope with environments based on selective breeding from individual breeders

  • Minimal behavioral issues (meaning behavioral issues such as separation anxiety, unreasonable aggression, etc.)

  • Must be a proven working dog (breeding dogs)

Physical Standard

GENERAL APPEARANCE – Dogs should be symmetrical in outline, balanced in height-to-length ratio, with the head erect and the legs set squarely. Males should be masculine and females should be feminine. Size and scale are important but should be considered within the range of the breed or mixed breed type.

FEET AND LEGS – There should be ample bone and strength. Straight, well-set legs and hock angulations that allow effortless stride and smooth movement are desired.

HEAD – Shall be strong and blocky, with a proportionate muzzle, alert eyes and ears, and correct bite.

BACK – In accordance to breed or mixed breed type, there should be a strong, even top-line with adequate length and smoothness through the withers. Tail should not be curled too tightly or excessively long.

RIBS AND CHEST – Chest should have adequate width and depth for heart and lung capacity. Ribs should show adequate covering of flesh.

BREED ABILITY – Males must have two descended, well-developed testicles.  Females must have functioning teats and be free of disease or malformation. Females must show strong maternal instincts.  Animals lacking these traits should be disqualified.

COLOR – All color patterns and markings are equally acceptable.

COAT – All coats are equally acceptable but should be easily maintained and self-cleaning.

Disqualifications

The following should be penalized, according to the severity of the problem:

1. Blindness or Deafness

2. Cryptorchidism

3. Malformation of the feet and legs such as bad hock angulations.

4. Overbites or underbites

5. Weak or swayed back

Any dog that is disqualified from the breed standard will not be registered. A mandatory removal from the program will allow for selective breeding. However, a digital Certificate of Authenticity (COA) will be granted to anyone who owns a registered Grand Korumak. After the COA is granted, qualifying breeding dogs will be evaluated and approved, promoted, and registered at 12 months old, and at that point, an official Certificate of Registration will be issued.
