The Grand Korumak Association® (Korumak, pronounced “kora-mock”, is a Turkish word meaning “to protect”) was founded as a non-profit in January of 2023 by a group of like-minded, animal-loving, hard-working women. We set out to innovate a dog that suited all of our needs by selectively breeding dogs with the most desirable traits. Our team saw a need to selectively breed by removing dogs from the program that did not meet our standard. We utilize rigorous evaluation for breeding stock while ensuring ease of puppy rearing in the most critical years. Mindful and precise selection would allow for the best working dogs to be elevated into a successful breeding program. Like with any breed, and even just with any individual dog, at times we encountered existing issues with dogs that were too aggressive, too friendly, displayed fear barking due to lack of confidence, had a limitless desire to roam, and had the inability to bond with stock. In addition, many new livestock owners entered into an industry with little to no guidance, looking for a better answer to fit their needs.

With further research on specific ideals and legalities, we chose to hone in on the needs of homesteaders and ranchers alike; a need for a livestock guardian dog that is deliberately and responsibly bred. We sought after a working dog that actively guards at a young age, wanting to keep its charges close. A dog that combines consistent working ability, the desire to remain a “Sticky Dog®” with stock, and a dog that respects appropriately set boundaries. Our goal is to develop a purebred livestock guardian dog that is capable of being on duty sooner, and that ultimately surpasses our expectations. The Grand Korumak Association supports its members in improving, promoting, and developing this phenomenal new breed of dog.

WELCOME!

We breed our dogs on a generational scale. From a purebred “foundation” dog to a fifth-generation “Sticky Dog”. Here is a general breakdown of what we can expect to see in our dogs as they evolve into later generations. (We require a hip test for every breeding dog, and a DNA test for every other generation that’s going to be bred.)

Foundation – LGD Breeds Only, at a purebred level (for example, an AKC Anatolian or purebred Great Pyrenees). DNA is preferably clear (while some markers can allude to future problems or breeding complications (carrier x carrier), we want to allow for the responsible breeding of an utterly impressive candidate, taking all things into consideration.)

G1 – Solid in multiple points but not necessarily all. Some include character, work ethic, stock exposure (poultry as early as possible), stable temperament, etc. DNA is preferably clear.

G2 – In addition to previous generational goals, breeding dams should show solid mothering instinct, and pups shouldn’t be wild or terribly difficult. DNA is preferably clear.

G3 – In addition to previous generational goals, you should see a solid temperament and fully clear DNA at this point.

G4 – In addition to previous generational goals, all dogs should be easy to introduce to stock. Certain lines may prove for a certain stock, like cattle vs. goats vs. poultry, and that is okay, but consistency is key.

G5 – A Grand Korumak® will display all previously listed requirements, and a purebred GK will fit the breed standard.

Thank you to those who helped us launch this amazing project. Your collaboration, brainstorming, volunteer work, and support mean so much. We appreciate you.
